F1 Flashlight

The Eryx F1 flashlight is our flagship light.  It was over a year in development and has been, by far, the most challenging and satisfying project we've taken on.  Watch the video and read on for more details.

Machining

Picture
We love machining and design every product to take full advantage of the modern CNC tools we use.  The crown jewel of machining on the Eryx is the Dragonskin battery barrel.  The Dragonskin texture was inspired by snake skin.  We then took that inspiration and blended it throughout the whole design.  From the scales on the bezel to the fully milled titanium pocket clip it all is blends together seamlessly.

Design

Picture
The Dragonskin texture is a sensory overload that you'll find hard to put down!  It has a sharp yet silky smooth feel to it that's easy on the hands and still provide's excellent grip for your every day carry needs.  The fully milled titanium pocket clip has been designed to be simple and easy to clip to most pockets and has had its texture milled to match the scales on the lights bezel.

Light

Picture
We chose a high quality LED to light Eryx.  The standard LED is a Nichia 219c in a warm white color rendition.  The bulb is mounted to a metal core PCB  (MCPCB) and secured to a solid copper pill which is mounted to the external heat sink to manage and dissipate the heat from the LED.  The light shines through a LEDil Boom reflector and it's all capped off with a custom made sapphire lens.  It has a tested output of 1035 lumens.

Electrics

Picture
Driving Eryx is the powerful and highly programmable Dr Jones H17Fx driver.   We use silver plated, teflon insulated wire in our lights due to it greatly enhanced performance over other wire.  The Mcclicky switch, which is in the tail cap is the highest quality switch on the market and is forward switching.  That means you can momentarily activate the light by lightly pressing it before fully clicking it on.  The standard battery barrel is for a lithium ion 18350 cell.

We've taken the humble flashlight and poured every bit of our machining experience into refining it to perfection.  Every detail has been considered right down to having the finish on the titanium clip match the finish on the bezel to the subtly engraved logo in the tail cap.  We here at Focusworks hope you enjoy your light as much as we enjoy making them for you.

Focus Works Eryx Impressions
Hey all, I just wanted to share my thoughts on a proto of a new and quite amazing light from Jordy at Focus Works Edc, a company I'm proud to say is practically local for me (Vancouver, BC, Canada). They are known for nicely machined spinners and tops, you can check out the selection here:https://www.focusworksedc.com/
The light is named the Eryx, a type of snake. The name is apt due to all the snake like cues of the light, from the shape of the head, to the "scales" of the knurling (although I like to call it dragon scale).
The intricate details of the light are remarkable. The most striking aspect is the dragon scale knurling, the scallops and lines give it a truly unique look while providing a firm grip.
The head is a beautifully machined piece with smooth swooping lines that echo the snake theme.
The heatsink is a large chunk of finned copper that allows the Eryx to handle heat well, transferring it to the body and dissipating it through the fins. It does get quite hot with extended use on turbo, so be mindful when blasting it on max output.
The tailcap section is also a substantial piece of copper. This adds a nice contrasting design touch for the body and greatly helps in balancing the weight of the light.
Overall the the light is quite hefty though so don't expect it to be a lightweight Edc tool. It's a hefty, solid piece of art. It's a touch longer than most similar lights in the category due to the reflector and switch used, as well as the substantial heat sink.
The light can be secured using the exquisite machined clip. The clip is firm and provides a solid (almost too solid) grip due to the aggressive knurling. This one might catch a bit on thicker pockets due to the slim profile and knurling. The bolt pattern is compatible with Steel Flame (AF) clips and is the standard 4-40 size. One can customize with any manner of custom clip.
The practical aspects of the light are solid, established and dependable.
The driver is an H17Fx, using the flexible, programmable Lucidrv2 firmware. This is one of my favourites as it's very customizable and offers very low moonlight mode as well as a direct drive Fet mode for max output. The "x" variant of the driver has a more efficient Fet channel (the board is also blue). Programming it can get a bit involved but I really like it in use. Just be mindful of how hot turbo can get! It can be set up to almost any configuration you want.
The LED is not finalized yet but my sample is using a very pleasant high cri 4000K Nichia 219C. It's one of my favourite tints and offers great colour rendering and good output. Other LEDS will be offered but nothing is fully decided yet. The LED is mounted on a direct thermal board perched on a huge copper heatsink, so it's set up well.
The switch is McClicky. A solid, quiet forward clicky switch. This allows for momentary activation for quick bursts of light. It's my favourite mechanical switch.
The reflector is a LEDiL boom. A well known reflector used in some other notable high end lights. The beam profile is useful with a wide smooth spot (not a thrower). I do notice a "sunburst" pattern outside the spill with this LED and reflector combination but it was not noticed during most of my use.
The LED centering is not perfect in this setup but it does not affect the beam. There will be some fixes in the production run that should improve the centering.
The lens is sapphire so should be nice and scratch proof in most circumstances.
So, overall this is a masterfully machined piece of art. It's backed up with some fine electronics so it will provide flexible, adaptable illumination in an ultra stylish (and solid/hefty) package.
